Interesting tips for dental care

Dental care is important as a preventative measure. Tooth enamel does not contain any nerve fibers, so your brain does not receive any pain messages whilst the enamel is decaying and eroding. Only when the erosion has progressed right through the enamel into the dentine under the enamel, will you become aware of the pain. By this time, the damage is done and a dentist’s services are required urgently.

Before you need a dentist, there are a few things that will help you maintain good health and oral hygiene. This article looks at some interesting tips for dental health care.

Root Beer – Root Beer has been shown to be one of the safer drink options if you care for your teeth. Root beer is non-carbonated and has no acids that cause tooth erosion, unlike other soft drinks. This study was published in the March/April 2007 edition of General Dentistry, an AGD clinical and peer-reviewed journal.

Toothbrush – Your tooth should not be stored anywhere within six foot of your toilet. When you flush the toilet, airborne particles escape and fill the air. These particles are full of germs and bacteria and if it lands on your toothbrush, it could be the cause of illness.

Straw – Another tip for caring for your teeth is to drink your beverages using a straw. When doing this, the acid content in your usual soft drinks will make less contact with your teeth before you swallow. The acidic drinks like sodas and diet sodas places your tooth enamel at risk of erosion every time it comes into physical contact with your teeth.

Baby bottles – A similar tip is applicable to what beverages are placed in baby bottles when putting them to bed. Often parents use milk or some warm drink to help baby fall asleep, but these liquids come into contact with the mouth bacteria and the sugar reacts to create acids that erode your baby’s teeth. Even worse, it forms little pools around their teeth and is not swallowed immediately, prolonging the exposure. This is applicable to both milk and natural juices. The best choice for baby’s bottle is to use water. Even better, do not use a bottle to put baby to bed at all.

Chewing gum – When chewing sugarless chewing gum, the chewing action produces saliva in your mouth. Your saliva helps to dissolve sulfur molecules that can be the cause of bad breath. Saliva acts like a natural mouthwash by neutralizing the acids from plaque bacteria as well. Just remember to close your mouth whilst chewing!

Thumb sucking – Toddlers often like sucking on their thumbs, but this is a habit that needs to be discouraged by about the age of 18 months. If a toddler does not stop sucking their thumb soon after this age, the upper front teeth can tip forward toward the lip and not grow into their normal position in the mouth. The best tip for encouraging older children to stop sucking their thumbs, is to use behavior modification rewards when they reach certain milestones.

Prevention is better than cure. Rather take care of your teeth in advance!
