Answering your questions about power toothbrushes

In an attempt to avoid problems with teeth or even having to resort to bad breath treatment, toothbrush manufacturers has been striving endlessly to invent better and easier solutions for people to use when performing the most basic function of dental health, brushing your teeth.

Most people still use their old manual toothbrushes and some are slightly apprehensive about switching to a power version. We have all heard of the advantages of using a power toothbrush but it seems that people are really taking their time making the exchange. Let us take a brief look at these new inventions and try to demystify them.

There are a number of options available on the market that fall into the broad spectrum of being called a “power” toothbrush:

 Battery powered toothbrush
 Rechargeable electrical toothbrush
– Rotating head (called oscillating or 3D action)
– Sonic cleaning action

Battery powered toothbrush

Generally this type of toothbrush works with two AA batteries and the head of the brush has a vibrating action. These vibrations helps to loosen more plaque than what you can achieve with a manual toothbrush. You would however still be required to move the toothbrush by hand in controlling the brushing action, like you would with a normal nylon bristled brush. The head of the brush should be replaced every three months to remain hygienic and effective in doing its job of cleaning your teeth properly.

Rechargeable electrical toothbrush

This type of toothbrush usually have a base or stand where the handle of the brush fits into. This foundation is connected to an electrical cord and plug that slots into your wall socket. By placing the handle of the brush into its slot into the base, you can keep it fully charged at all times or alternatively you can charge it, remove it and use it till you notice the charge is deteriorating before recharging it again.

These toothbrushes come with extra features that may include and are not limited to:

 Different brushing modes for sensitive teeth, gum massage or teeth whitening.
 Sensors that indicate when you are pressing too hard on your teeth or gums.
 Alarm timer to make sure you brush long enough.
 Digital reminders that the head needs replacement.
 Can fit multiple brush heads for different needs depending on the customer.

Rotating or oscillating(3D) head toothbrush

Quite simply this toothbrush features a round brush head that rotates at a high speed. This results in a better clean (3 Dimensional clean) than what can be achieved by hand brushing. The bristles can reach in hard to clean places and the teeth receives many more strokes of the cleaning brush than what can be achieved with manually in the same time window.

Sonic toothbrush

Sonic toothbrushes emits a sonic sound at a frequency between 20 Hz – 20,000 Hz. These frequencies are audible to the human ear. There are ultra-sonic options available that works at frequencies above the 20,000 Hz and thus not audible at all.

This sonic action works by finely tuned sonic bristles charging the air bubbles created by brushing, with a sonic energy wavelength. This results in a deep clean that are claimed to be better and healthier than any other option available.

Power toothbrushes are here to stay and the technology is being improved upon frequently. As with all new things, it might be time to pack away that old hand brush and try this wonderful invention.

Guidelines to teeth cleaning

You can keep your teeth and gums healthy by following a few guidelines and routines on regular basis. By adhering to these suggestions and making it a part of your dental health regime, you may never develop some everyday problems like gum disease or have to seek out treatment for bad breath.

Brushing your teeth

It is recommended that you brush your teeth twice a day and also after any meals. By doing this diligently, you will avoid acid build up in the mouth that causes bad breath. This routine will also remove the majority of plaque build up before it can form tartar from not being cleaned regularly.

Flossing

Flossing is the act of taking a thin waxed nylon thread, slipping it between any two teeth and then gently sliding it back and forth to dislodge any food particles that got stuck between your teeth during your last meal. Flossing is also very good for removing any plaque build up between the teeth. Usually flossing can remove food and plaque where your toothbrush simply cannot reach.

When a person has never flossed before, it is possible that the first time they floss might be slightly painful on the gums and slight bleeding is completely normal. This simply happens because you are causing agitation where you have never ventured to clean before. Your gums will get used to the flossing action in no time at all and you can keep up this routine to have a healthy and clean mouth.

Cleaning your tongue

Cleaning the surface of the tongue is often something not taught to youngsters and it can be a challenge to form this habit as an adult. Every person should do this at least once a day, since your tongue comes into contact with all the food and drink you consume. The natural saliva in your mouth forms a chemical reaction with the food and it leaves a build up on the tongue that is easily removed by scraping or brushing. A dirty tongue is often the cause of bad breath.

Caring for you gums

It is important to gently brush your gums on the outside of the teeth as well as on the inside, including the palate of the mouth. Make sure this is done for the top row of teeth as well as for the bottom row of teeth.

When brushing the gums, make sure to use a soft toothbrush and not to apply too much pressure that can bruise or harm the soft tissue of your gums and your mouth. It should be thought of more like a gentle massage rather than an actual brushing of the gums.

Oral irrigation

Oral irrigation is an action that comes highly recommended by dental professionals. This is the action of applying a high-pressure water jet spray directly to the teeth and especially where the teeth meets the gums. These strong water jets will penetrate the gaps between your teeth as well as the gaps between your teeth and gums, cleaning out plaque build up that got stuck there, later to become the cause of cavities.

By following these general guidelines and making your dental health care routine a part of your daily life, you will ensure healthy teeth and gums and avoid most serious mouth and dental related problems.

Causes of Bad Breath

Depending on eating habits, most people will find that the intensity of bad breath can vary during the day. Statistically it has been proven that most cases of bad breath originates in the mouth, as much as 85 – 90% of the time. Ordinarily known as halitosis, an age old condition, it is caused by the anaerobic bacteria found on the tongue. This bacteria reacts to different stimulus found in various conditions of living. When this bacteria reacts, it produces bad smelling compounds and fatty acids in the mouth.

Food, drinks and habits that can have an influence on bad breath include but are not limited to:

  1. Meat
  2. Fish
  3. Garlic
  4. Onions
  5. Cheese
  6. Cigarettes
  7. Alcohol

Morning breath is a notorious condition for which people seek bad breath treatment. This is mostly the result of the mouth being less exposed to oxygen during the night. Due to the mouth’s inactivity, these gasses gets trapped and find that there is no form of escape to alleviate the foul smell.

In the majority of cases bad breath are short-lived and can be quickly and easily treated with over the counter products such as brushing with a good toothpaste, flossing between the teeth to catch the food particles stuck there and by rinsing out the mouth with a good mouthwash.

Persistent bad breath or chronic bad breath affects some 25% of the population to varying degrees. In cases that are very serious, there are sometimes a medical origin and it needs to be looked at by a dental professional or maybe even a doctor or specialist. Examples of medical cause of bad breath includes things like:

  1. Sinusitis or sinus infections with post nasal drips
  2. Lung diseases
  3. Diabetes
  4. Liver disease
  5. Kidney disease
  6. Tonsillitis
  7. Gallbladder dysfunction
  8. Carcinomas
  9. Menstruation
  10. Anorexia
  11. Obesity

It is also possible for serious conditions of bad breath to have causes that originates in the dental region such as:

  1. Periodontal or gum disease
  2. Oral cancers
  3. Extensive dental decay
  4. Oral infections or abscesses
  5. Xerostomia or dry mouth conditions
  6. Oral conditions caused by discharges or post-nasal drips
  7. Allergy conditions or reactions to food intake

Over 600 different types of bacteria can be found in the average person’s mouth and several dozen of these can be the possible cause of foul odors. They create such a volatile sulfur compound that is even measurable with special equipment. This happens when the proteins a person consumes start breaking down the amino acids to produce bad smelling gasses called hydrogen sulfide.

Your first cause of action when you suffer from chronic bad breath is to seek the attention of your dental professional and see if they prescribe any specific bad breath treatment for you. They will usually prescribe a method of treatment and then monitor the situation over a few weeks. If you show other signs or symptoms over and above the bad smelling breath, make sure that you get yourself checked up by a doctor to eliminate a more serious underlying condition.

How to Maintain Dental Health at Any Age

Words alone cannot suffice the importance of ensuring that you maintain a good dental health throughout your entire life. The routine for maintaining good dental health should begin from your early childhood years going all the way into your adult life.

There should definitely be no reason as to why you cannot practice good dental health. This is why it is important for parents to encourage their children to practice activities such as regular cleaning of teeth and such like acts that will protect your dental structure. The need to start practicing good health practices at an early age is so that you can avoid any cases of dental complaints in your later years. An interesting fact is that expectant mothers can actually give their children a head start to having an all round healthy dental composition. Expectant mothers should ensure that they consume foods that are rich in calcium as this will strengthen not only their teeth but also those of the child as well.

Folic acid supplements should also be consumed as they're able to decrease the risk of the baby developing a cleft lip deformity. Once the baby has been born, the parent should ensure that they practice the habit of wiping the baby's mouth on a regular basis once the baby has been fed. This will prevent an accumulation of bacteria that would otherwise interfere with their dental health. This should go on as the child grows up until they're able to brush their own teeth. However, it is important for the parent to train the child on how to brush teeth before you can leave that task to them. Parents are actually advised to brush their children's teeth up until the child can learn the art of brushing teeth in the right way.

By taking care of your teeth during your early years, you can definitely expect to have an easy time once you start getting older. The solid foundation you had set up will reward you in your later years as you will have very few cases of dental complaints, if any. The dental routine that you were used to should not change just because you have a solid dental structure. You should still continue to practice brushing of teeth on a regular basis while flossing your teeth at the same time. Remember to also brush your teeth and gums so that every possible bacteria accumulation is avoided.

Adults are usually advised to always respond to any unusual pain, bad breath or dental discomfort by seeing your dentist for bad breath cure and solving other problems with your teeth. Ignoring the pains regardless of whether they're simply occasional or persistent will just make things worse for you. Try and make time to visit the dentist as only a professional's perspective can reassure you of your current dental state. The visit to the dentist will also help you get the proper medication to treat any persisting problems. It is also advisable to maintain the habit of not eating sugary foods as these are the main cause of dental problems.

However, this can easily be avoided when you maintain the trend of consuming diets rich in calcium and the other nutrients that supplement the teeth structure.

Dental hygiene is important to control plaque and tartar build up

The importance of plaque and tartar control in dental hygiene can not be overstated. If you take care of your teeth from a young age, you will not have to solve other common tooth related problems and would not have to seek out for bad breath treatment.

There is often confusion in how plaque and tartar are related and how they differentiate from each other. Here we provide a small guideline to help you identify and control these persistent “tooth devils.”

Plaque control

The deposits of plaque constantly form on the surface of your teeth and is characterized by a sticky, colorless substance. Fluids from drinks, saliva and food particles combine in the mouth to form plaque deposits which build up and form where the gums and teeth meet. The build up of plaque over a long time, can cause the teeth to stain and is known to be the primary cause of gum disease and bad breath.

Good dental hygiene becomes very important when dealing with plaque and good practices should be learned as a child in order to take care of your teeth on a daily basis. If plaque is not controlled, it can also lead to the weakening of the teeth enamel and then causes cavities.

Plaque starts forming on the teeth immediately after brushing, which is why you need to brush your teeth regularly. It is recommended that you brush at least three times per day and again after meals. You should also floss daily to get rid of the plaque build-up between your teeth, in the places where your toothbrush can not reach.

Tartar control

Tartar, also known as calculus, is a hard and crusty substance that forms on and around the teeth where the plaque has been sitting for a long time. It is made up of calcium and phosphate which combines to form hard crystals on the teeth. With the forming of these crystals, it can also cause tooth discoloration as it traps the stains and colors that existed in the food and drinks that caused the original plaque build up.

The strong bond to the teeth, that is typical of tartar can only be removed by a dental professional and not through brushing or flossing. The treatment involves a chemical called pyrophosphate that decreases the build up and stops the growth of these hard crystals on the tooth surface.

Prevention

As you grow older, you become more susceptible to the build up of plaque and tartar on your teeth. It is therefore of paramount importance to take very good care of your teeth as you grow older. The best solution of course is to teach children good dental hygiene practices from a young age, so it becomes second nature as they move into adulthood. If these foundations are laid solidly, it will also prevent them from having to solve other tooth related problems later in life.

To prevent plaque build up changing into tartar, follow the instructions mentioned earlier about brushing and flossing. As a further preventative measure, you should also:

  • Have your teeth cleaned by a dental hygienist every six months
  •  Have your teeth checked by a dentist for any potential problems at least once a year.
  • Use a toothpaste that contains pyrophosphate. This chemical will adhere to the surface of your teeth and inhibit the growth and formation of calculus crystals.
  • You can also brush your teeth with a toothpaste that contains sodium hexametaphosphate, which is a pyrophosphate that has been specially formulated to not only inhibit the forming of calculus, but it also loosen and breaks the bonds of existing stains. This will do two things. It will whiten your teeth and it will create a protective barrier to prevent further staining.

If you follow these guidelines in the prevention and control of plaque and tartar build up, you will avoid many other problems and issues related to dental hygiene. Prevention is better than cure, any day of the week!

Tips for Maintaining a Fresh Breath

Most people are prone to bad breath at some point or another in their life as there is a bacteria thriving in the mouth that is one of the main causes of bad breath. The root causes of bad breath need to be identified because in some situations your bad breath problem could actually be a medical problem. In medical cases, you need to cure or bring the underlying medical condition or disorder under control first, before undertaking bad breath treatment that will simply not work as it is not curing the root cause.
Other common factors in people experiencing odorous breath problems, are decaying teeth, gum disease, sinus and throat infections. You can even find that poor digestion or problems with the digestive tract are to blame for causing those unpleasant smells. The medical list is endless and includes conditions like liver disorder.
It has to be said that many of the causes of bad breath can be sorted with a little bit of common sense. Let us discuss a few ways in which to fight bad breath.
  • Remove food particles from your mouth by brushing your teeth and rinsing your mouth thoroughly after every meal. If you are nowhere near your toothbrush, or have no mouthwash handy, use water. It is not as effective, but will certainly help.
  • It is important to brush your tongue as well. There are thousands of little hairs on the surface of your tongue that can trap bacteria and cause your breath to be unpleasant.
  • Regular visits to the dentist cannot be stressed enough and this is where most people go wrong, leaving a visit to the dentist for emergencies only. During your regular check-up, your dentist will rule out gum disease and can help to rectify any faulty restorations, overhanging fillings or leaking crowns. These are the places where food can get trapped in the mouth.
  • To increase the flow of saliva, which contains an defense against the bad breath bacteria in your mouth, chew on sugarless gum or suck on sugarless lozenges.
  • When you snack on vegetables like celery or carrots in their natural raw state, they will assist  by preventing plaque from forming on the surface of your teeth.
  • Drink plenty of water. This will keep your mouth moist and prevent dry mouth. You can also swish the water around your mouth to help loosen the bits of food that the bacteria can feed on.
  • The antibacterial properties in peppermint or tea tree oil, will kill the bacteria found in the mouth. Place a few drops on the tongue or on your toothbrush to freshen your breath.
  • Avoid alcohol that are contained in some breath mints and mouth washes. Their main function  are to cover the smell and they can also create a dry mouth. This dry mouth is a more favorable environment where bacteria thrives.
  • This one is so obvious, but it is amazing how many people ignore it. Do not eat onions or garlic before going to an important meeting or date. Very few things can mask this smell and usually the garlic user is blissfully unaware of how they smell to the people around them.
  • The consumption of caffeine can cause dry mouth that helps the bad bacteria to thrive.
  • Smoking causes nicotine and tar to build up on the surface of the tongue, cheeks and teeth. It causes a dry mouth and inhibits the saliva flow.
  • Leafy green vegetables such as parsley, contains chlorophyll, which acts as a natural breath freshener.

These tips and bad breath treatments should help you to maintain a fresh breath as long as there are no underlying medical conditions that needs the care of a medical professional.

Historical facts and myths about dental care

History shows many quirky ideas around dental care. Historian, anthropologists and archeologists have found a number of references and evidences of ancient dentistry. For instance evidence from as early as 700BC shows false teeth made from carved animal bones and ivory. Let us have a look at some more examples found in history.

Dental floss and toothpicks

Dental floss and toothpicks was used by ancient man. Anthropological evidence has shown that when food got wedged between their teeth, our ancestors was as concerned and discomforted by it than we are today. The grooves in their teeth shows the use of ancient tools to relieve this condition.

Modern dental floss is manufactured from nylon string coated with wax and can even be flavored for a more pleasant experience. In older times a thread made of silk was used to clean between the teeth and to dislodge food particles that got stuck during eating.

Toothpaste

Scholars think that toothpaste was used as early as 500 BC in China.

The toothpaste that can be traced back to the 1800s in the modern western world, has been shown to have soap as a main ingredient. This caused people to gag when cleaning their teeth and was thus a practice best avoided unless you had a good reason to do so or someone to impress. This was best leaved for special occasions.

Tooth ache

An Egyptian remedy for toothache, dated from 1550 BC, includes ingredients such as dough, honey, incense, fennel seeds and onions. There are a few unpleasant superstitious remedies employed by the Egyptians as well. Without going into too much detail, it involves half the warm body of a recently deceased mouse and pressure applied to the aching tooth.

Ancestors to modern dental care solutions

Hippocrates believed that the food particles that lodged itself between the teeth was the culprit for causing tooth decay. He suggested that teeth that were loose or decayed should be pulled.

Metal fillings (amalgam fillings) was first developed by the Chinese. It is mentioned first in 659 AD in medical texts. By the 12th century they also developed both full dentures and invented the model used for contemporary toothbrushes used during the 15th century.

The Spanish-Arab surgeon, Abu al-Qasim, also known as Abulcasis, lived between 936 AD and 1013 AD. He influenced Islamic and European medical practices with his writings on dental irregularities. He said to use gold wire to make teeth more stable and to make artificial teeth from ox-bone. He was also amongst the first to document the shape and size of dental tools and to make drawings of dental saws, extraction forceps and files.

History often shows solutions to problems that we as a modern people have forgotten.  The sugar content of soft drinks and energy drink reacts chemically with the plaque bacteria in your mouth, causing the creation of a diluted acidic substance. This substance eats away at your tooth enamel, causing tooth cavities, which in turn causes bad breath. Most of these drinks also has their own acid content which is in fact so strong that if you place a tooth into this liquid, the tooth will decay and erode in a fairly short time span.

Interesting tips for dental care

Dental care is important as a preventative measure. Tooth enamel does not contain any nerve fibers, so your brain does not receive any pain messages whilst the enamel is decaying and eroding. Only when the erosion has progressed right through the enamel into the dentine under the enamel, will you become aware of the pain. By this time, the damage is done and a dentist’s services are required urgently.

Before you need a dentist, there are a few things that will help you maintain good health and oral hygiene. This article looks at some interesting tips for dental health care.

Root Beer – Root Beer has been shown to be one of the safer drink options if you care for your teeth. Root beer is non-carbonated and has no acids that cause tooth erosion, unlike other soft drinks. This study was published in the March/April 2007 edition of General Dentistry, an AGD clinical and peer-reviewed journal.

Toothbrush – Your tooth should not be stored anywhere within six foot of your toilet. When you flush the toilet, airborne particles escape and fill the air. These particles are full of germs and bacteria and if it lands on your toothbrush, it could be the cause of illness.

Straw – Another tip for caring for your teeth is to drink your beverages using a straw. When doing this, the acid content in your usual soft drinks will make less contact with your teeth before you swallow. The acidic drinks like sodas and diet sodas places your tooth enamel at risk of erosion every time it comes into physical contact with your teeth.

Baby bottles – A similar tip is applicable to what beverages are placed in baby bottles when putting them to bed. Often parents use milk or some warm drink to help baby fall asleep, but these liquids come into contact with the mouth bacteria and the sugar reacts to create acids that erode your baby’s teeth. Even worse, it forms little pools around their teeth and is not swallowed immediately, prolonging the exposure. This is applicable to both milk and natural juices. The best choice for baby’s bottle is to use water. Even better, do not use a bottle to put baby to bed at all.

Chewing gum – When chewing sugarless chewing gum, the chewing action produces saliva in your mouth. Your saliva helps to dissolve sulfur molecules that can be the cause of bad breath. Saliva acts like a natural mouthwash by neutralizing the acids from plaque bacteria as well. Just remember to close your mouth whilst chewing!

Thumb sucking – Toddlers often like sucking on their thumbs, but this is a habit that needs to be discouraged by about the age of 18 months. If a toddler does not stop sucking their thumb soon after this age, the upper front teeth can tip forward toward the lip and not grow into their normal position in the mouth. The best tip for encouraging older children to stop sucking their thumbs, is to use behavior modification rewards when they reach certain milestones.

Prevention is better than cure. Rather take care of your teeth in advance!
